When neither religion, tradition nor literature is capable of serving as
a common moral language, it may be that the one moral code all modern people can understand is self - interest.
Each culture (or civilization) contains a
common language, a shared view of reality, a shared set of values and goals, and
common patterns of behavior, both
moral and ritualistic.
