reviews are so valuable to the process of exposure that some
companies are set up strictly to write impartial
reviews, despite requiring the authors to
pay for the service.
When a Fiverr reviewer says, «Just tell me what you want the
review to say,» it's not honest, whether the person
paying for it is an individual or a big publishing
company.
Now you may think that the biggest issue here is that you're
paying for reviews and yes, I get that that's a «thing» now with Amazon — but you may hire blog
companies to do a blog tour with a guaranteed number of
reviews.
Not unless you don't care what kind of attention you get, of course — but given that
companies who fake
reviews online are now getting hit with massive fines in New York, you still might want to steer clear of
paying anyone to write a bogus, needlessly positive
review for you!
Then there was the piece the New York Times ran on restaurants and other
companies who
pay people to write fake good
reviews for their products, and a similar piece by On The Media
for WNYC (it's worth a listen!)
When we hire
companies to go on blog tours, and
reviews are part of that this is in a way is part of
paying for the
review so that your or my book will be noticed
for a nanosecond so that a potential reader will experience it.
So I guess the real question isn't so much, to me, how do I feel about
paying for positive
reviews as much as
paying for reviews at all, since most often a writer, or publisher, is more likely to
pay a reviewer
for a positive
review than a negative one, and likely reviewers, and
reviewing companies — not just the one mentioned in the article — know that.
What you
pay for when you deal with a reputable
company is an honest, well - written
review delivered to you
for a set price and on a set schedule.

paid review company (or: that is not the work that most booksellers / librarians know it
for and
pay attention to).
