Unfortunately, it is difficult to
compare recent hurricane activity to that of earlier periods, because the technology for hurricane detection has dramatically improved in recent years.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) reported a build of 6.181 million barrels in United States crude oil inventories,
compared to analyst expectations that inventories would build by 10.1 million barrels for the week ending September 8 as many refineries in the Gulf Coast remain offline and demand in Florida wanes in the wake of the most
recent hurricane.
... incomplete and misleading because it 1) omits any mention of several of the most important aspects of the potential relationships between
hurricanes and global warming, including rainfall, sea level, and storm surge; 2) leaves the impression that there is no significant connection between
recent climate change caused by human activities and
hurricane characteristics and impacts; and 3) does not take full account of the significance of recently identified trends and variations in tropical storms in causing impacts as
compared to increasing societal vulnerability.
