When you get more
complaints about debt collection than about any other industry, what do you do?
The CPFB will be taking over the work of compiling and handling consumer
complaints about debt collectors beginning in January 2013.
Today we'll also start taking
complaints about debt collection problems related to any consumer debt, including credit card debt, mortgages, auto loans, medical bills, and student loans.
Mistaken identity — trying to collect a debt from the wrong person — was by far the most common
complaint about debt collectors.
Not exact matches
In fact, according to a report by the New York City Bar Association,
complaints to the Attorney General in that state
about debt settlement actually went up in 2011, after the new regulations came into force.
As consumer
debt exploded there, the
debt settlement business grew with it and
complaints about the sector soon followed.

The CFPB has handled
about 50,700 student loan related
complaints and sent
complaints to
about 360 companies, in total, including student loan servicers,
debt collectors, private student lenders, and companies marketing student loan «
debt relief.»
During that time period, the Bureau handled
about 7,700 private student loan
complaints, and 2,300
debt collection
complaints related to private and federal student loans.
But the irony is that
debt complaints and reports
about credit cards have tripled in comparison to the last year.
Before you sign up with a
debt relief service, check with your state Attorney General to see if any consumer
complaints have been registered
about the
debt relief company.

To complain
about debt collection practices, go to your local Better Business Bureau, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) takes consumer
complaints online and through its toll - free number: (800) FTC - HELP.
If there are still multiple
debt collectors reporting for the same
debt you can go directly to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to make a
complaint about the credit bureaus inaccurate reporting.
