than 30 000 people in the United States commit suicide, but recognition of persons who are at high risk for suicide is difficult, making efforts to prevent its occurrence problematic.1,8 - 10 The US surgeon
general brought attention to this
complex public health issue by recommending that the investigation and prevention of suicide be a national priority.11
