The Ekklesia Project, begun in 1999, is something of an attempt to answer that question and close the gap between Hauerwas's academic project and
the concrete life of churches.

of a natural law and which aims at subjecting not only the sentiments
of men's hearts but also the
concrete reality
of life and history to the law
of the Gospel.
Thus faith is immutable divine law
of the
Church and also true and
living practice, determined not only by abstract principles but also by
concrete ideals.
In very many instances in actual
life the
Church had to leave the individual to his own conscience, even though it was neither easy nor sure for the individual to draw from general Christian principles a
concrete prescription for a definite course
of action at a definite point
of space and time in his
life.
And now they have the impression that people are discussing anything and everything, questioning everything, that everything is collapsing, that their own perhaps hard - earned and dearly - bought rigid adherence to the doctrine, and above all the traditional practice,
of the
Church even to the slightest
concrete detail
of the style
of religious and secular
life, is disavowed and almost despised by the
Church and its leading representatives.
The ministry, or in
concrete terms the clergy, has often too easily the impression, not merely that the
Church has to proclaim what are certainly correct principles
of social, cultural and political
life, but that by that very fact it possesses, for everything

Certainly the new element can not simply be separated from one's ordinary
life, but by fulfilling the precepts
of the catechism and the commandments
of the
Church and being in this sense a good Christian, we have not yet adequately responded to God's call to our
concrete and unique person.

Is it not true that Paul's «purely» theological insights are, on closer inspection, responses to the cultural crises and
life situations
of young
churches facing
concrete problems, and that his «purely» practical advice has within it a theological dimension?
Just as Christ in his
concrete historical reality (and not only as the eternal Logos
of the world) is the salvation
of all men, even
of those who
lived before his time, through hundreds
of thousands
of years
of an immeasurable, toiling history, obscure and unintelligible to itself, the same applies, mutatis mutandis, to the
Church.
But precisely for this reason all Christians do not only receive a complete and supposedly
concrete natural law which is communicated to them by the official representatives

Church, they also find out for them - selves the actual requirements
of public

church structure and other substitutes for the
Living Christ render discipleship irrelevant.4 Second, in answering the call
of Christ one must take the first
concrete step.
When we inquire further as to the
concrete meaning
of Jesus, after his death, within the
life of the early Christian community, we find ourselves at once forced to deal with two theological issues
of fundamental importance: the nature
of the
church and the nature
of revelation; for the essential and permanent significance
of Jesus lies in the fact that he was the center and head
of the
church and that he was the central figure in that revelation
of God which we have received and by which we are saved.
The
church's task was to nurture the conscience
of its members in ways that taught them how to seek the mind
of Christ in the
concrete circumstances
of their
lives.
Ultimately, for Balthasar, the answer to these difficulties which arose in the postconciliar understanding
of the
Church can be found in the
concrete,
living person
of Mary, who constitutes the true
life and mission
of the
Church.
Protestant sects also have been tempted to pursue a sort
of perfectionism that was highly self - regarding while another stream in Protestant religion has been so spiritualistic and individualistic that the
concrete life of the secular societies has been actually ignored as beyond the scope
of a spiritual
church's responsibility.
The abstraction from
concrete social reality in each case tends to create the illusion that theological ideas or practices
of worship or
church legal systems have ghostly
lives of their own that transcend the
concrete particulars
of the communities that more or less believe the dogmas, practice the liturgies, and follow the rules.
Instead, however, and as the best substitute, the
Church would need to give the individual Christian three things: a more
living ardour
of Christian inspiration as a basis
of individual
life; an absolute conviction that the moral responsibility
of the individual is not at an end because he does not come in conflict with any
concrete instruction
of the official
Church; an initiation into the holy art
of finding the
concrete prescription for his own decision in the personal call
of God, in other words, the logic
of concrete particular decision which
of course does justice to universal regulative principles but can not wholly be deduced from them solely by explicit casuistry.
