If members experience service to others in
the congregation as their ministry, it is much easier for them to see that their work in the world is also service to God.

If (and when) I believed that, I doubt I could have accepted having someone in
ministry in my
congregation that I believed was living a lie, accepting something sinful
as a central part of their lives and identity.
A profound Christian revival of local
congregations might be too much to hope for
as a consequence of coming to grips with inclusive language, if there were not another factor common to most of the churches that have taken inclusive language seriously: they are also the churches most likely to be open to the
ministry of ordained women.

ministry of the church, which is «to provide for the inner needs of the
congregation» [3] Thus, while
ministry is understood broadly
as that which the church provides for its members within its borderlines, mission concerns those beyond the church's boundaries.

A
congregation that is able to see its
ministries as service to God probably has a pastor who has helped people to recognize that why they do something is
as important
as what they do.
Though some of the splashier and more publicized experiments of the «wired church» attract the most attention and concern, most
congregations that use computer technology are simply trying to make the
ministries in which they are already engaged more effective, attractive and applicable to the lives of the people they serve, especially the young, for whom these technologies are
as familiar a part of everyday life
as using the telephone — a mobile unit, that is.

As old forms of

congregation continue and are modified, there must be room for the emergence of new forms and new activities.
But it is crucial that local leaders — lay
as well
as clergy — begin to lead churches in an enlarged
ministry, one that takes full measure of the age structure of the
congregation.
(1) clarity, strength and persuasiveness of Christian conviction and commitment; (2) good preaching and the ability to design and lead meaningful worship; (3) conviction of and commitment to pastoral calling
as integral to Christian
ministry and pastoral care; (4) deep sensitivity to the needs of people individually and in groups; (5) concern for, dedication to, and skill in working for congregational development and growth
as a part of faithfulness, for the nurture and retention of members who show signs of slackening commitment, for the motivation and training of lay persons to work for church growth; (6) capacity to generate enthusiasm in other people, personal warmth, competence, spiritual authenticity; (7) ability to encourage and generate a spirit of unity in a
congregation; and (8) organizational development and conflict management skills.
Within such an approach, several themes would play especially important roles: pastoral care
as the
ministry of the whole
congregation in the world; the identity of the ordained minister in his or her pastoral office
as both enabler and representative of the calling of all Christians to minister in the world; and a threefold focus of pastoral care, including the person or persons in need, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the faith of the Christian church
as represented in Scripture and tradition.

congregation's
ministry, such
as preparation and delivery of the church's preaching.
The pastor's need for a metaphor for
ministry which provides a sense of meaning through all the personal crises of passing decades
as well
as the continual need to balance the demands of the
congregation with maintaining the integrity of the «call» can be met by the New Testament based metaphor for
ministry as being a «prophetic guide to maturing in the Christian life.
The landscape of the missional debate is filled with questions, assumptions, and opinions - along with hard pressed critiques on wider issues such
as leadership styles,
congregation sizes, vocational / bi-vocational
ministry, building church - based or house church - based
as well
as core theology.
