Niebuhr maintained that
sensuality was both a form of idolatry which made the self god, and an alternative idolatry in which the self,
conscious of the inadequacy of its self - worship, sought escape by finding some other god.24 He described three forms of
sensuality (luxury, drunkenness, and sexual passion) to demonstrate this.
