conservation of polar bears is if hybridization occurs rapidly and in combination with other stressors, will that hybridization have more of a negative effect now than it did in the past,» says Andrew Whiteley, a geneticist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The precarious state

of Washington scientist, published this week in
Conservation Biology, assessing the status

of Arctic marine mammals, including seals, whales and
polar bears.
Amstrup adds, «It fills a gap in our otherwise extensive knowledge

polar bear conservation is arresting the decline
of their sea ice habitat.»

(Keep in mind that almost all Arctic sea ice researchers add a big caveat when talking
of an «ice - free Arctic Ocean,» noting that a big region
of thick floes north and west
of Greenland will almost surely persist in summers through this century, which is one reason some scientists have proposed targeting
polar bear conservation efforts there.)

While Mr. Kempthorne and Dale Hall, director
of the Fish and Wildlife Service, said Wednesday that they saw no separate risk to
polar bears from oil and gas activity, the latest assessment
of the species for the International
