Even after taking account of the child's
social background and family circumstances, low overall parenting
skills were associated with
poorer general health, greater longstanding illness,
poorer mental health, worse dental health, lower physical activity, higher screen time, lower fruit and vegetable
consumption, and more snacking amongst children.
For two health outcomes (limiting long - term illness and
social, emotional and behavioural difficulties) and two health behaviours (screen time and fruit and vegetable
consumption), children of parents with average
skills were also more likely to have
poor health and
poor health behaviour than children in the high parenting
skills group.
