Reach out to your networking contacts to drum up new business, and create a bucket list of companies you'd like to do freelance work for — then send them a great pitch.

More often that not, either you've researched the company and know you want to work for them or someone has recommended that you contact them.

That said, I know several college students who have called a medical company and reached out to their Human Resource Department (or LinkedIn contact) to see if they would allow them to intern for inside sales or to work somewhere within their headquarters.

Not every company has a referral program, but it is a good bet that your contacts who do work for companies with referral programs have no idea those programs exist.

It's better to take the time to conduct a targetted search with a limited number of companies you would want to work for, than uploading your resume to any and every company for any job, and hope to be contacted.

If you have contacts working for one of your target companies, ask them about employee referral programs where they may be rewarded for referring you to their employer.

You could contact the company rep and ask some questions about the company, their evidence of existence on the market (for online companies), and things that would help you see how they work with customers.

To pursue opportunities that might not be advertised yet (or in some cases might not exist officially yet), you need to actively work on establishing and / or strengthening your access to potentially valuable resources, such as contacts within companies you'd like to work for.

An employer is free to have communications with any other person or company about any topic they wish, just as you are free to contact any person who is considering coming to work for your employer.

Find the names of hiring managers (that's your potential boss or boss's boss) at companies you'd love to work for and contact them with your resume.

Linkedin gives you the opportunity to possibly connect to everyone you professionally have worked and done business with, by searching for contacts by name, company or industry.

Start identifying and contacting hiring managers at companies you'd like to work for.
