artist Willis Earl Beal, playing a character close to himself who's looking for inspiration in a legendary city that's as much mirage as actuality; and two horror
films, Jennifer Kent's uncanny, driving psychodrama The Babadook, with a remarkable performance by child actor Noah Wiseman, and Ana Lily Amirpour's less sustained A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, which nonetheless generates some powerful political metaphors.
I tried to think like a Yahoo! commenter while watching Coogler's
film because I felt like the message of the
film was already speaking to my choir and I wanted to consider how filmmakers and
artists can reach beyond the echo chamber to try and change some minds about the issue of race in
contemporary America.
If a
film about a fashion designer from two of
contemporary cinema's most obsessively detail - oriented
artists, for which one of said
artists actually learned to make couture gowns, can't get nominated for an award recognizing excellence in costuming, then what hope is there for the rest of us?
The likes of The
Artist and Argo may still coast to victory sometimes, but
contemporary winners like 12 Years A Slave, Birdman, Spotlight, Moonlight, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country For Old Men, and The Departed add up to an eclectic batch of
films that only feel like inevitable Best Picture winners in retrospect.
I thought it an interesting
film, what with the modern updates by
contemporary artists bringing a similar energy to the original in the tracks played.The music also explained pieces of the jig - saw: the multi-personae that he adopts - the psychic trickster, the outlaw cowboy, the mystic savant, the Cassandra of doom.
