The study, detailed online Dec. 3 in the journal Hormones and
Behavior, involved 108 heterosexual women who had not used birth
control in the past three months and who were not pregnant or breast -
feeding.
The finding of significant correlations between change in the parental automaticity scores and change in the child's food intake in the intervention group (but not in the
control group) was consistent with the idea that increased automaticity of healthy parental
feeding behaviors was the route to the changes in the child's food intake.
Results: For all parental
feeding behaviors, automaticity increased more in the intervention group than in the
control group (P < 0.01 for all).
Parents in the intervention group (n = 58) received training on habit formation for 3
feeding behaviors;
control participants (n = 68) were asked only to complete the measures.
