A study published
by Cell Press October 16th in Cell now reveals that gut
microbes in mice and humans have circadian rhythms that are
controlled by the biological clock of the host in which they reside.
Now research in rodents suggests that gut
microbes may alter the inventory of microRNAs — molecules that help keep cells in working order
by managing protein production — in brain regions involved in
controlling anxiety.
Many common diseases may be influenced
by the microbiome, because
microbes control many of the body's essential chemical processes: They predigest our food, chemically modify the pills we take, shape our immune system responses, and repel infectious invaders.
The scientists say their light - responsive circuit could help
control the flux of metabolic pathways in vats of
microbes used to produce pharmaceuticals or industrial chemicals,
by turning on and off in response to red, green, and blue light — a veritable bacterial disco.
Resistance to antibiotics
by bacteria and other
microbes is an ongoing public health crisis, contributing to about two million infections and 23,000 deaths per year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
The study thereby introduces a new possible
control mechanism — enabled
by social interactions among individual
microbes — that may help to explain the massive reservoir of carbon and other nutrients in soil.
For decades, researchers have worked to improve cacao fermentation
by controlling the
microbes involved.
«Microbiologists have rarely taken into account fluid flow as an ecological parameter, whereas physicists have just recently started to pay attention to
microbes,» he says, adding: «The ability to directly watch
microbes under the
controlled flow conditions afforded
by microfluidic technology — which is only about 15 years old — has made all the difference in allowing us to discover and understand this effect of flow on
microbes.»
One of the main ways that hosts manage their interactions with
microbes is
by carefully
controlling the genes that their cells use.
Their analysis demonstrated that under carefully
controlled conditions, a
microbe called Clostridium thermocellum is twice as effective as fungal enzymes used
by industry today.
Now, researchers suggest that damage
control is helped
by the
microbe's tendency to pack extra copies of its genome into tidy doughnuts of DNA.
Even insects that ate GDL but no pathogen died sooner than
control animals, their bodies ravaged
by opportunistic
microbes.
By controlling which genes were turned off, the team could dictate which sugars the
microbes could consume.
«
By controlling the types of
microbes that thrive around their roots, plants could be trying to protect themselves from less friendly pathogens while promoting other
microbes that stimulate nutrient supply.
The new study found that the level to which the immune systems of mice tolerated H. hepaticus is determined
by the interplay of two types of T cells, which
control whether the immune response to a
microbe amplifies.
Framing ecological adaptations manifested in morphological and behavioral phenotypes of species from
microbes to man in the context of evolution should be detered
by experimental evidence of ecological speciation that is nutrient - dependent and pheromone -
controlled.
Studies conducted and supported
by NIAID have led to important new discoveries about the
microbes that cause NTDs, the identification of targets for potential new drugs and vaccines, and the development of strategies for
controlling organisms that transmit NTD - causing agents to humans.
Some studies have explored the means
by which
microbes might
control hosts» brain function and social behavior.
Sari Peura is trying to understand how
microbes control the carbon cycle in habitats where the food web is sustained
by external organic carbon inputs.
MPK4
controls what is known as systemic acquired resistance, or SAR, which occurs as a response to invasion
by microbes.
«When we first realized infections were caused
by microbes, and that we could
control that with sanitation and drugs, that was considered a great thing.
«
Microbes are required
by our defenses to communicate, educate as well as to stimulate and
control the form of immunity we are going to develop».
Again, the minimization of the detrimental LPS burden
by beneficial
microbes appears to be a central mechanism in the promotion of normal glycemic
control [89].
Identify the key variables that are likely to
control the mobility and availability of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from thawed permafrost and how these and other important biogeochemical materials will be processed
by microbes and vegetation.
