The overheating problem, however, was a larger
issue — we had
coolant leaking into the cylinders (with little evidence other than constant need to refill) and I had to replace the lower intake manifold gasket.
When an overheating
issue is caused by a blown head gasket, the primary failure which occurred causing this is when combustion gasses
leak into the
coolant passages (usually
coolant is
leaking into the cylinder at the same time).
I'm a tech for Vw and I do really like working on them but their are days were things go wrong just last week I had a tdi passat in losing
coolant pressure tested system no external
leak found tpi regarding cylinder head
issue removed inlet manifold and pressure tested no luck I assumed it was the egr cooler as I eliminated dsg cooler and oil cooler.
Yours is not the only mark \ model that has this type of
issue: jag x type are known for
leaking coolant tanks, again made of plastic.
This is bad, as it means either a head gasket / sealing
issue or a crack in the engine block is allowing
coolant to
leak inside the engine.
It sounds like you have four
issues: 1) Overheating 2)
Leaking coolant 3) Water Pump installation problem 4) Heater core problem The water pump bolts, which ensure a good seal...
Common problems: Oil and
coolant leaks, as well as Check Engine light
issues are not uncommon.
The system should be inspected for
leaks to ensure there are no other
issues causing the engine
coolant level to drop.
A
coolant pressure tester is useful for diagnosing overheating
issues and
coolant leaks.
It has 199k miles on it and has only had a few minor
issues (1) water pump went out around 140k miles, replaced, (2) began using
coolant at a slow rate but no
leaks.
