The demand
of hundreds
of copies per year times thousands
of titles equaled real money to these publishers... not «per
book» but as a total, and it was money that didn't previously exist, because these low demand
titles before this technology would have simply been «Out
of Print».
For example, using Amazon's pricing on the New York Times Bestseller list for fiction
titles, the first ten average out to $ 13.59 for e-
book versions versus $ 15.31 for printed
copies, a difference
of under two bucks a
book.
Traditional publishers build their business around the typical sales curve
of a print
book: put a lot
of copies on bookstore shelves, see what sells in the first 90 days, and deal with returns and marginal ongoing demand on most
titles.
These include Ingram's
Title Management System (TMS) and catalogs, a
book webpage and inclusion on the author's page, an informational tip sheet, assistance with advanced review
copies (ARCs), as well as endorsements and reviews, e-
