Ten school districts across California are riding another wave of education reform that could significantly change how
a core subject is taught throughout the state — the Next Generation Science Standards.
Introduced in September 2014 the new curriculum has had a profound impact; not only on the way
the core subject is taught — with pupils expected to learn «fewer things in greater depth» - but also on the way teachers are expected to challenge and support their pupils.

But not for all the usual reasons that people raise concerns: the worry about whether we've got good measures of teacher performance, especially for instructors in
subjects other than reading and math; the likelihood that tying achievement to evaluations will spur
teaching to the test in ways that warp instruction and curriculum; the futility of trying to «principal - proof» our schools by forcing formulaic, one - size - fits - all evaluation models upon all K — 12 campuses; the terrible timing of introducing new evaluation systems at the same time that educators
are working to implement the Common
Core.

Teaching Common
Core Writing in the
Subject Areas (due out in April), a valuable way the students show me their research
is by providing at least 10 hyperlinks throughout their essays, regardless of whether they
are writing short stories or argumentation essays.
Support for high - quality
teaching and leadership, especially in
core subjects,
is vital to help raise achievement for all.
This includes recommendations suggesting that: primary schools should bring in outside experts to
teach coding; all primaries should have 3D printers and design software; secondary schools should
be able to
teach Computer Science, Design and Technology or another technical / practical
subject in place of a foreign language GCSE; the Computer Science GCSE should
be taken by at least half of all 16 year olds; young apprenticeships should
be reintroduced at 14, blending a
core academic curriculum with hands - on learning; all students should learn how businesses work, with schools linked to local employers; schools should
be encouraged to develop a technical stream from 14 - 18 for some students, covering enterprise, health, design and hands - on skills; and that universities should provide part - time courses for apprentices to get Foundation and Honours degrees.
Key areas which will
be monitored
are high entries for qualifications that
are not
core subjects; double entry in qualifications that overlap in content such as statistics and free standing mathematics qualifications; and entry for GCSEs in English language and literature when «the latter
is not
taught with sufficient time to support effective achievement».
It can
be taught easily and integrated into reading and math —
core academic
subjects that everyone
is focused on right now.
Department for Education data also reveals that children in many English secondary schools
are being taught other
core academic
subjects, including chemistry, geography and languages, by teachers lacking
subject expertise.
In this post, I will break down a few basic classroom practices that allow teachers to engage with best practices in
teaching core subjects while also
being advocates for social justice in the classroom.
All
core subjects, such as English, Maths, Physics, Geography, History and Chemistry,

subjects, including arts.
