A mixed pavane of
wrasse, grunt, and goby maneuvers beside us, plucking late lunch from pockets of stone.
Wrasse help remove lice from salmon, enabling farmers to use fewer pesticides.
These clients recognise cleaner
wrasse by their small size and the blue stripe running along their sides.
The cleaner
wrasse stroke their clients to cement the relationship and ensure that they don't attack them.
She presented captive pairs with artificial «clients» — actually plexiglas plates — that carried two pieces of prawn, which
the wrasse love, and either four or eight fish flakes, which they don't like as much.
But
the wrasse have a serious conflict of interest.
All bluestreak cleaner
wrasse are born female.
Bluestreak cleaner
wrasse have small home territories called cleaning stations.
Large - bodied species such as the blue - throated
wrasse were observed in greater numbers in a marine reserve following protection from fishing, leading to greater community stability and resilience.
Damselfish are less effective colonizers than butterflyfish and
wrasse.
Among bluehead
wrasse, little yellow females (inset) can turn into multihued males.
«We collected wild damselfish with or without access to cleaner
wrasse and tested their ability to solve a feeding test in the lab.»
However, this vital role in maintaining healthy reef communities may be under threat: cleaner
wrasse are among the top marine fishes caught for the aquarium industry, due to their colourful patterns and charismatic behaviour.
Binning and her team found that sick seafish can get well again by seeking out other animals like the blue - streaked «cleaner
wrasse,» a common aquarium fish that eats harmful parasites off their «clients,» helping keep them healthy.
In Norway, more than half the supply of another cleaner fish — called lumpfish — comes from hatcheries, although the species are easier to breed in captivity than
wrasse.
The corkwing
wrasse was 92 per cent more abundant in some samples from the non-fishing zones.
Such hatcheries are being developed in Scotland — another major producer of farmed salmon — but they are not yet at a point where they could replace
wrasse caught in the wild.
Halvorsen says that unchecked, urchins can completely obliterate kelp forests, and this could happen if
wrasse are overfished.
They found that the goldsinny
wrasse was up to 65 per cent more abundant in samples from the non-fishing zones.
A population crash is unlikely to be imminent, says Halvorsen, but this is the first time we've realised that natural
wrasse populations seem to be shrinking.
Almost
all wrasse currently used in Scotland and Norway come from wild sources.
Small fish called
wrasse painlessly peck sea lice from the skin of farmed salmon, enabling salmon farmers rely less on powerful pesticides that can harm other marine life.
Halvorsen says that annual hauls of
wrasse by Norwegian fishing crews have soared in recent years, from less than 2 million in 2008 to 22 million last year, supplying a country that is the leading producer of Atlantic salmon.
In the meantime, Halvorsen hopes that the new rules, involving stricter size limits for which
wrasse can be caught, will be accepted, leaving more fertile fish in the sea to replenish wild populations.
Wrasse consume many molluscs and crustaceans, and play a key role controlling populations of sea urchins that can deplete seafloor kelp forests — vital sanctuaries for many marine species including young cod.
One way to save the wild populations would be to develop hatcheries where
wrasse are bred specially for salmon farmers.
But as juveniles,
wrasse want to be served shrimp.

Jon and Dylan finished their Open Water Course by getting a visit from one of our bigger species — a big Napoleon

Explore rich, diverse coral gardens that help form these protective ocean walls, filled with hard and soft corals as well as the reef's most iconic species such as sharks, stingrays, turtles, whales *, groupers and cods, maori
wrasse and parrotfish.
During the 30 minute «Snorkel Safari» you'll learn how the reef was formed, how coral feeds, grows and breeds as well as seeing some very special inhabitants - from parrotfish to magnificent anemones, cleaner
wrasse and of course, anemonefish (nemo!).
Here's some of the fish I've seen while snorkeling at Black Rock: Butterfly fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish, moorish idol, tang,
wrasse, box fish, cardinal fish, perch, chub, trigger fish, the former Hawaii State Fish Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, goat fish, snapper, porcupine fish, hawk fish, jacks, mackerel, cornet fish, needle fish, turtles, crustaceans, and invertebrates.
Here's just some of the marine life I've seen at Molokini: Butterfly fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish, moorish idol, tang,
wrasse, squirrel fish, soldier fish, perch, chub, trigger fish, the former Hawaii State Fish Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, goat fish, snapper, hawk fish, jacks, emperor fish, big eye scad, cornet fish, needle fish, eels, crustaceans, invertebrates, and reef sharks.
Under the surface of the waves, you'll find a veritable aquarium: king angelfish, cortez sea chubs, giant damselfish, rainbow
wrasse, octopus, pufferfish and sea cucumbers.
If you have more time, you can add some additional underwater adventures such as a visit to the walls on the ocean side of the reef, an exploration of coral caverns, or a stop at a dive site where freshwater springs bubble up from the reef, attracting Napoleon
wrasse and sea turtles.
Yellowhead
Wrasse with bright yellow heads and turquoise bodies, magenta Fairy Basslets, deep blue Tangs, and Blue Striped Grunts with electric blue stripes running across their bodies.
Divers can discover anything from small finds such as anemonefish, pipefish and shrimp / goby pairs to turtles, rays, groupers, Maori
wrasse and several species of shark, including reefs, white tips and bronze whalers.

They are a type of
wrasse (Family Labridae) and can weigh as much as 20 pounds.
In the lagoon between the reef and the island, small barracuda, jacks, grunts, flounder,

After sweeping over a sandy field of garden eels, we peel out over the wall into swarms of yellowtail snapper and Creole
