Chicagoans watched closely last week for clues about the future of the city's
schools, as Mayor Richard M. Daley prepared to assume unprecedented
control over a big - city district through the appointment of a
corporate - style board.
And when we talk about improving public education, and the very real and increasing threat that is coming from the
corporate «education reform» types, who want to layoff teachers, ban or reduce collective bargaining rights, take -
over public
schools and transfer the care and
control of our public
schools to various third parties... let's not forget that many districts do not fund enough IA positions and every district fails to fairly compensate IAs for the incredible work they do.
The evil
corporate education reformers target yet another local elementary
school for closure and takeover through a bizarre scheme that would have allowed a public
school principal to resign his position as a public servant, become president of his own private company and then take
over control of both his old
school and the new
school.
A primary solution, according to these education reformers is to remove public
schools out of the
control of local community
school boards and hand them
over to boards made up of
corporate leaders or even hand them
over to private management companies.
(I even hesitate to use the word, «empower,» because it has long been co-opted by
corporate reformers and pasted
over their obvious top - down efforts to kill community
schools in favor of under - regulated «choice» strategically placed just out of true
control of those whom «choice» supposedly empowers.)
