The accurate monitoring and reporting of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is essential for
countries participating in climate mitigation
schemes, such as reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD +)-- a
scheme that pays developing
countries for the carbon stored
in trees and soils.
Participants
in the carbon pricing
scheme would have to pay 3.5 times more than they would if all
countries participated and all GHG sources were included.
The
country set up a REDD + working group
in 2009 to
participate in global efforts to develop a
scheme that compensates developing
countries as an incentive to change the way forest resources are used, hopefully curbing carbon emissions.
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, KenGen (a Kenyan company), Germany and Iceland will be the first
countries to
participate in the new
scheme.
