When the news came to my ears that a brand new 2D Castlevania for an actual home console was on the way, my heart leapt — aside from a
couple of ports and remakes
of classic titles it's been two years since the somewhat disappointing Order
of Ecclesia on the DS, and a whopping thirteen years since the last release
of a non-remake 2D «vania on a home console — Symphony
of the Night.
The plot is incredibly cheesy, as is to be expected given the timeframe
of release, and Dante is an endearing and campy protagonist;
coupled with the sublime ranked combat system, it's no wonder that the
title cemented itself as an instant
classic when first released.
The Virtual Console has been a large part
of Nintendo's previous offerings, with the Wii, 3DS and Wii U all having their own selection
of Virtual Console
titles,
classics from the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and even a
couple of other platforms.
