There's stories online of authors being published
by a
traditional big
house publisher who feel their
covers didn't represent their book well, but had no say in the matter.
But I and many of my other author friends treat this professionally and hire a reputable
cover artist (mine is used
by traditional houses); hire a developmental / content editor AND a copyeditor AND one or more proofreaders (many of whom are from
traditional houses and are working on the side); and hire a professional formatter.
The first book is an excellent example of an ugly
cover made
by a
traditional publishing
house to appear in print.
Book promotion is the other area once
covered by traditional publishers and now left largely to book authors, even when you publish with the bigger and more reputable
houses.
Third, although
traditional publishing
houses have editors and you have already paid for one, the prestige of being accepted
by them, with the orchestra of copyeditors,
cover artists, and marketing experts behind them to help you, will relieve you of a lot of the work for your next big project.

covering that here.)
If you're an author being published
by a
traditional publishing
house, don't count on having a lot of say on your book
cover.

traditional advertising methods like print ads and press releases to gain the kind of attention needed to move the needle for your business, it doesn't hurt to

house promotion
by leveraging popular newspapers, magazines, news stations, and other outlets in your market.
