On the beach, we notice that the sea is far away and leaves a large patch of sand once
covered at high tide exposed.

covered in water
at high tide.

covered by sand, with few exposed rocks, readily passable
at all but the
highest tides.
The sea is generally fairly shallow here -
at high tide it can

tide drops, it can expose previously hidden reef, rocks, sand, etc., and when the
tide is
high, it can
cover up the surf spot with so much water that it ceases to have any waves
