systems with the most stopping power, the Institute started rating passenger vehicles for front
crash prevention in 2013.
So, for example, the Subaru Outback can be advertised as earning the Top Safety Pick Plus rating, even though much of the inventory
on its dealers» lots are not actually TSP + eligible because the forward
crash prevention system is not included
on top - selling trims.
Although luxury vehicles are more likely to have optional front
crash prevention systems, the technology is catching
on with more mainstream nameplates.

on the Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and Honda's four winners, to Subaru's EyeSight warning and autobrake
system.
The ratings program is based
on HLDI research of the insurance claims of Acura, Mercedes - Benz and Volvo models with front
crash prevention systems (see «They're working,» July 3, 2012).
The Institute's research
on the effects of front
crash prevention on police - reported
crashes found that vehicles with forward collision warning and automatic braking had a 20 percent higher rate of being rear - ended than vehicles without the
systems.
