Achievement First grew out of that experience as the vehicle for

charter schools to offer pre-k.

school districts, mayoral takeovers, and much

This comes just days after The New York Times / Siena College Poll released last week showed a resounding majority (See NECSN's release here) of New York City likely voters favor
creating more public
charter schools.
While the city's
charter schools ran independently of Rhee's efforts to reform the public
school system, the slow improvement in the
schools overall paralleled the city's growth — as the city's population grew over the last decade,
more parents chose to enroll their children in the city's
school system,
creating pressure for better
schools and
more schools.
Education policy changes made this decade by state lawmakers have helped
create a trend in which enrollment in traditional public
schools has declined while
more students are enrolling in
charter schools, private
schools and homeschools.
We should ask ourselves why we keep pitting
charter schools against neighborhood public
schools — a strategy that has
created little
more than a disruptive churn.
It provided fairer funding for existing public
charter school students, cleared the way for
more new public
charter schools to open across the state and
created a Commissioner's Network to turn around chronically failing public
schools.
For years, efforts to improve K - 12
schools have focused on developing
more rigorous academic standards, testing students, holding teachers and administrators accountable for students» test results, and
creating new
charter schools.
