Of course, this still might be somewhat forgivable if De Bont and first - time screenwriter David Self didn't openly acknowledge their inspirations for the film — the wonderfully
creepy 1963
movie of the same name, as well as its source, the novel «The Haunting of Hill
House.»
The uniformly terrible trailers are wildly misleading and this is not a cheapo
creepy house horror
movie like they make it seem.
That's not the only film that Disturbia lifts ideas from; it also borrows from other
movies that have taken Rear Window's core element of mystery and murder in the
house of the neighbor next door, most notably in The «burbs and Body Double, with its emphasis on sexiness and some darkly disturbing subject matter that keeps the sights titillating and the atmosphere
creepy.
Under James Wan's direction, even the most clichéd haunted -
house tropes (and this
movie is bursting with them) are genuinely
creepy, and although the
movie isn't overly reliant on jump scares, the ones it does use — well, they work.
These days Wilson is more known for his
creepy haunted
house horror
movies INSIDIOUS and THE CONJURING, but it would be refershing to see him step away from the genre for once.
We're still not sure if this
movie is going to be a return - to - form, in terms of quality, but this trailer promises a ton of jump scares and a super
creepy haunted
house exploration in the
movie.
The camper van is soon located along with its owner, a gangly, inarticulate man - child named Alex (played to
creepy perfection by Paul Dano), who lives with his aunt (Melissa Leo) in the kind of run - down, cluttered tract
house where serial killers and other
movie deviants tend to reside.
Meanwhile, Olivia Wilde starts off doing something in the vein of her
House M.D. character, but eventually steals the show by portraying a genuinely
creepy and frightening horror
movie villain.
As the creator of Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 1 & 2, Blade II, and Pacific Rim, expect this
creepy ghost
house movie to be super slick and give the hair on the back of your neck goosebumps.
A very
creepy haunted
house movie with some mediocre acting, cheap special effects and some rather confusing, if silly, plot twists at the end.
