Shouldn't being good be a much more important
criteria than belief?

It's just a shame that we haven't come to the point in society where it should be required that those who make decisions must meet certain, more highly regulated, fool proof, corruption resistant
criteria proving their intellect and open mindedness as well as weeding out individuals with preconceived notions, racist, sexist or religiously or other discriminative views (even if they themselves don't believe they are discriminative in their
beliefs... this happens more
than many people realize) and overall ignorant minds.
The «truth» of a construal of the God - world relationship is a mixture of
belief (Ricoeur calls it a «wager»), pragmatic
criteria, and what Philip Wheelwright terms a «shy ontological claim,» or, as in Mary Hesse's striking remark, «God is more like gravitation
than embarrassment» (Arbib and Hesse, 5).
-- both to life and thought is in fact a very proper plea, if for no other reason
than that it claims for itself such relevance; but to establish some concept of «relevance» as the
criterion of Christian
belief is a sad mistake.
Applying a policy,
criteria or provision equally to everyone but the effect to a person of a particular faith or
belief is disproportionately worse
than a person without faith or not holding a particular
belief.
