Candidates will identify the individual teacher and administrator
cultural competencies required for ELL success
Cultural competency requires, first and foremost, that teachers see themselves as lifelong learners who will inevitably encounter new cultures in the classroom, whether immigrant, racial, technological, stylistic, and more.
Building
cultural competency requires studying the traditions and values of a community, seeking to understand through authentic community engagement, intentionally building trust within a community, and considering their contributions and ideas.

cultural competency training and each campus will be
required to submit its progress annually.
To attain to a high level of intercultural
competency, students
require enough time to not only acquire another language to sufficient proficiency, but also time to explore, explain, investigate, and reflect upon the perceptions of other
cultural groups, their values and their beliefs.

cultural competency in teachers, that intentionally surfaces and explores beliefs, and that fosters the skills necessary to build equitable schools.

In 2004, these organizations hosted a summit, funded by The Wallace Foundation, to identify indicators of
cultural competency and the actions
required to move from concept to implementation.
One was the necessity of
cultural competency training for lawyers, and the second called on law schools to
require all students to take a course regarding Aboriginal Peoples and the law.
MHS
requires all employees to attain a minimum degree of
cultural competency and
cultural sensitivity and to routinely demonstrate these traits in every day work relationships.
It is also recommended that teachers and staff contact their local transcultural mental health service if they
require cultural competency for managing mental health in students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
There are
required core areas of knowledge, skills, and
competencies for infant - family and early childhood mental health professionals
required for providing services that are responsive to
cultural and linguistic diversity.
The
competency domains Integration of Science and Practice, Ethical and Legal Standards, and Individual and
Cultural Diversity are
required for all postdoctoral residencies regardless of specialty.
Cultural competency does not
require us to become experts in cultures different from our own.
This
requires the development of
cultural competency which will be discussed in Chapter 4.
