Many of the pieces in the exhibition were not created with specific religious issues in mind, yet Njami's
curatorial decisions help the works to open up, allowing them to actively comment on the specific themes within.
In light of the recent
decision by the Museum of Modern Art, New York to hire a consulting curator to
help with «the strengthening of its holdings» in black art, this closed door session addressed the idea of «progress» made by ethnic specific institutions and the nature of
curatorial work within these institutions in today's social and cultural conditions.
