Adolescents were not eligibleif they were actively suicidal or mentally retarded; had a life - threateningmedical illness or a
current diagnosis of substance abuse disorder, psychosis, or schizophrenia; were currently in treatment for
depression; or were takingantidepressant medication.
An emerging body
of literature has suggested that generalized anxiety not only reliably precedes
depression,3,54 - 56 but vice versa.3 By disaggregating childhood and adolescent
diagnoses, the
current study found that this pattern was developmentally nuanced: only childhood
depression predicted young adult GAD and only adolescent GAD predicted later
depression.
The findings reported herein suggest that remission
of maternal
depression over 3 months is statistically significantly associated with reduction in children's
current symptoms and
diagnoses after controlling for the child's age and sex, baseline symptoms, socioeconomic status (annual household income), as well as severity
of maternal

MDD youth were excluded if they had a
current diagnosis of obsessive — compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, conduct disorder, substance abuse or dependence and ADHD combined type or predominantly hyperactive — impulsive type, or a lifetime
diagnosis of bipolar disorder, psychotic
depression, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or a pervasive developmental disorder.
Inclusion criteria for the
current study were: European Caucasian descent, IQ ≥ 80, no
diagnosis of conduct disorder, autism, anxiety disorder,
depression, epilepsy, general learning difficulties, neurological disorders or known genetic disorders (e.g. Fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome).
