the current generation of teachers and those of color, in particular, have a distinctly different mindset than their baby boomer and generation X predecessors; what habits of mind and experiences contribute to their understanding of quality teaching and student learning; what constitutes good and useful preparation and practice; and what processes and policies accommodate cultural responsiveness and allow for all students to meet their full potential.
Does this mean that transformative instructional models will not come into the mainstream until
the current generation of teachers and school leaders retire?

generation of education entrepreneurs will find ways to transform the
current «one
teacher, one classroom» mind - set that dominates K — 12 education.
Members
of the
current K - 12
generation — called Millennials — are multi-taskers, more proficient with technology than their
teachers, more diverse (36percent are classified as non-white) than previous
generations, and they spend more time online than they do watching television.
Tasked with providing a quality education to our
current generation of students,
teachers also have a significant hand in shaping the future by instilling in children essential cultural and social values such as tolerance, gender equality and open dialogue.
By supporting
current teachers, and putting our efforts into preparing the next
generation of educators, we can ensure that students have access to the great education they need and deserve.

Many educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders worry that increasing selectivity may lead to a less racially diverse
teacher workforce, as minority candidates generally score lower on many
of the
current selectivity metrics used by
teacher preparation programs.14 Others maintain that the diversity gap will only continue to grow in the decades to come, even with a focus on the recruitment and retention
of the
current generation of prospective
teachers.15 Instead, those skeptical
of the United States» ability to attain both goals offer solutions such as increased cultural competency among the existing
teacher workforce to inspire and encourage a more diverse
generation of future educators.16
In addition, this presentation will identify some
of the forces that will have a negative impact on preservice
teachers» ability to integrate
current technology into the classroom and suggest strategies to bridge the
generations within our schools.
