Such thought could, of course, be understood as «church theology,» but the tendency of that rubric is to focus attention upon the traditions and
current life of the church in a way that is too limiting.
Not exact matches
We suspect that much
of the difficulty
of current church life, and our corresponding theology, is that we have not paid serious attention to how hard it is rightly to understand the common things we do as Christians — such as pray, baptize, eat meals, rejoice at birth, grieve at illness and death, reroof
church buildings.
If the
current trajectory
of the Catholic
Church continues there will be no one left besides people who
live in the 18th century with the desire to have it forced into government.
Then the social - ethical task
of the
church would not be simply to develop strategies within the
current political options — though it may certainly include that — but rather to stand as an alternative society that manifests in its own social and political
life the way in which a people form themselves when truth and charity rather than survival are their first order
of business.
The greatest challenge facing oldline Protestantism today is whether within our
life and thought we will welcome movements that buck the
currents of establishmentarianism, Christendom and modernity and that call the
church to speak once again the «language
of dissent» to a culture and
church of compliance and consumption.
The two
Churches heads discussed various matters including contemporary social
life, pastoral care, education and issues
of morality, while also touching on the
current events affecting both Egypt and Russia.
Yet it was through the
Church in one or another
of its many forms that the continuing
current of Christian
life found its main channel.
The Waldenses were in the tradition
of earlier twelfth - century leaders, such as Peter
of Bruys and Arnold
of Brescia, who led a
life of poverty, denounced the clergy for unworthy luxury and grasping for political power, and condemned many
of the
current customs
of the
Church.
This has been going on for at least the 2000 years
of recorded Christianity, and if there is ever going to be acceptance
of the
church by people who are trying to
live their
lives consciously, people who find safe haven in the unconscious hypocrisy that the
current Christian
church allows to exist are going to be the people who run that
church and Christianity in general.
It may be helpful to note, however, that an account
of the perceptions and interpretations
of the cultural context
of theology and
church life is as important as a description
of a
current trend in some graduate schools.
