Not having read Roald Dahl's 1982 children's book, I can't say how faithful this adaptation is (
though colleagues have suggested that darker aspects have been watered down), but it seems to follow the same basic trajectory:
Cute British orphan Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill) gets abducted by the title
character (played, or performance - captured, by recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance), who turns out to be the smallest and kindest inhabitant of Giant Country; Sophie winds up enlisting the Queen (Penelope Wilton) in an effort to stop the other, meaner giants (led by a performance - captured Jemaine Clement) from eating England's children.
That goes from the performances of the child actors — who,
though cute, tend to overact — to the strained and misjudged attempts at quirkiness from Ray Liotta, as Billy's father, and the distracting and needless Jamaican accents of two
characters.
The two new
characters — buff lady Frigg and
cute robot C - Zar — are a nice addition,
though more notable for their speed - defying jumping and fall - slowing thrusters, respectively, than their personalities.
The
character designs are
cute,
though, and the game chooses to play up that angle by having the
characters» emotional expressions accompanied by graphics over their heads.
A few
character interactions did get smiles out of me
though, and it is a little
cute that each Bomber has their own individual quirk, as one - note as they are.
It's the first great innovation that franchise had since Puyo Puyo Tsu, it's the last SEGA game published for Dreamcast, it introduced a whole new loveable cast of
cute anime
characters, and it has an English translation built in even
though it was only released in Japan.
If you like that sort of stuff
though, then this should be right up your alley as most of the supporting
characters are just as charming and likeable as Bayonetta herself - a
cute little girl in particular will steal your heart.
