The Securities and Exchange Commission launched a new
cyber fraud unit earlier this year amid the internet's ongoing Bitcoin boom, seemingly telegraphing its intent to crack down on a cryptocurrency market rife with hacking, fraud, and scams.
The crackdown on PlexCoin represents the first decisive action taken by the security regulator's new
cyber fraud unit, but is part of a much wider agenda to regulate ICOs.

The United States has a
cyber unit within the SEC, and the
unit recently shut down the ICO of a company called PlexCorps for alleged
fraud.
The SEC let tech companies know they were getting serious about digital securities
fraud when it created its
cyber unit which is wholly dedicated to the investigation and prosecution of ICO's and blockchain related companies.
The new
Cyber Unit was launched by the SEC in September to focus on problems like ICO
fraud, «misconduct» on the dark web, hacks aimed at stealing nonpublic information, intrusions into retail brokerage accounts, market manipulation schemes involving «false information spread through electronic and social media,» and
cyber threats to market infrastructure like trading platform.
