I prepped mine by boiling 3 inserts at a time for 20 minutes, then did a rinse cycle, then a wash
cycle with HOT water and detergent and I havent had any absorbency issues!

All together I have about 20 diapers, I always put the
water on the maximum setting, do a rinse
cycle, wash in
hot with a heaping tablespoon of detergent (sometimes twice if they're really icky) then do 2 - 3
cycles on warm
with no detergent.
A popular routine is setting two «speed wash»
cycles with warm
water, no detergent, after the
hot water and Dawn
cycle, just to help rinse everything out of the diapers.
In many cases this issue can be resolved
with a few was
cycles in plain old
HOT water and no soap at all.
Run a
hot rinse
cycle in your washing machine before you wash your diapers, and periodically clean the inside of your dryer
with hot water (rinse the filter
with hot water as well).
Calculations assume a
Hot / Cold
cycle in a typical washing machine, and include
water plus electricity for washer, electric dryer and electric
water heater,
with incoming
water temperature of 77F (25C), an average electricity rate / KWh of $ 0.15, plus price of
water of $ 5.50 / 1000 gallons.
For me it is easier to follow the Dawn wash
cycle with the 2 plain
hot water washes.
Others recommend following the Dawn
hot water wash
with repeated rinse
cycles (instead of full
hot wash
cycles) until suds are gone during the rinse
cycle.
Clean bottles in a dishwasher
with hot water and a heated drying
cycle, or scrub bottles in
hot, soapy
water and then sterilize them.
ALSO, if you wash your diapers in
hot water, that gets rid of poopies... and if you are STILL worried about poop, I say, run a
cycle with no clothes, just bleach, then wash a load of white towels
with bleach.
There really are no tricks, same as above pre wash (shortest wash
cycle) and be sure to spin out that dirty
water, heavy duty wash (longest wash
cycle) on
HOT with the full recommended amount of detergent for a large load and dry.
Step 2: Next perform a
hot water wash
cycle with detergent.
I tried the
hot wash / rinse
with no detergent, where you do a
hot wash followed by 3 - 4 rinse
cycles without detergent until you can no longer see suds in the
water.
If you experience so - called «detergent buildup» just run a few
hot cycles with just
water.
Program washer to the longest wash
cycle (heavy duty)
with hot water wash.
Note: If you use a dishwasher
with hot water and a heating drying
cycle (or sanitizing setting) to clean infant feeding items, a separate sanitizing step is not necessary.
Since the diapers have been sitting on shelves and potentially have been manipulated by other customers, we strongly recommend you wash them at least once (
hot water cycle with small amount of detergent) before using them for the first time.
I do one rinse
cycle and then a normal wash
with hot water.

If you are using a cold
