cylinder cars get a bump in power to nearly 325 hp — as much as the last - generation SS — thanks to
better - flowing
cylinder heads that feature integrated exhaust manifolds.
When I rebuilt the calipers on a

We tested the base five -
cylinder car, which gets a standard six - speed automatic, as
well as a TDI.
We're
well familiar with this N54 - series twin - turbo in - line six -
cylinder engine, having driven it in both the 3 - series and the Z4 roadster, but never before has it been installed in a
car with such a keenly tuned chassis.

cylinder cars, but the idea is similar - energy recuperation under deceleration, reduced turbo lag, and the ability to occasionally coast with the engine off -

Way
better choice than most 4
cylinder used
cars in this category, and even today (vs. other used
cars) I see these are priced right.
That
car uses a 2.4 - liter four -
cylinder engine, but it's possible that this system could pair with smaller engines as
well.
As
well as obvious rivals such as the Ford Fiesta ST - soon to be sold with only three
cylinders - and Peugeot 208 GTi, the Yaris should also compete with another WRC - inspired hot hatch due soon - Hyundai's i20 N Performance, a
car evo learned of at the Paris motor show.
Of course, performance isn't that different than in a four -
cylinder Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR - V, or Toyota RAV4, but of those
cars, this Mazda feels like it's the
car that would make the
best use of extra power.
Unlike the previous generation
car, which offered both the 1.4 twincharged four -
cylinder engine (which sounded much
better on paper than it was in reality) and later the 1.8 - litre TSI engine, this new
car features the
well - proven, torque - rich EA888 from the Golf GTI.
The four -
cylinder gets the
car up to highway speeds reasonably
well, but like other compact -
car engines, it has modest power to spare for high - speed passing.
Still, the Skyactiv four
cylinder engine produces a fairly
good punch for how fuel efficient it is, and combined with the
car's tight handling it will put a smile on a budget - oriented automotive enthusiast's face.
