has always been a bit heretical with its emphasis on
law over
love; but with the advent
of the Moral Majority / Religous Right many Christians
have become more like the Pharisees than like the disciples who followed Jesus.
Everyone
has the same needs: — Physiological / air food shelter etc — Safety / employment

Love / Belonging / family relationships — Esteem / achievement respect
of others — Self Actualization / morality creativity
As for early influences, probably no one
has directed my thinking more than Walter Rauschenbusch, a Baptist minister who was born in 1861 in upstate New York, and whose emphasis on the social gospel and the church
of Love rather than the Church
of Law spoke to me in seminary in a way that changed my thinking forever.
He is specifically cited in Reformation arguments, especially by Calvin, and both Luther and Calvin recognized that the themes they emphasized as the essential gospel
had been stressed earlier by Augustine: the universality and depth
of the problem
of sin; the consequent incapacity
