daily caloric restriction (CR) studies and 7 intermittent calorie restriction (ICR) studies.
Studies have directly compared
daily caloric restriction with intermittent fasting, while keeping weekly calorie intake similar.
Recently, a second trial directly compared zero - calorie alternate - day fasting and
daily caloric restriction in obese adults.
So what I get out of this is that
daily caloric restriction is CRAP.
In a recent review (Varady, 2011) and one recent randomized clinical trial (Harvie et al., 2011), authors conclude that intermittent fasting and
daily caloric restriction are equally effective at promoting weight loss in overweight and obese individuals.

However, I am very unclear about something: if I practice a
daily 16:8 IF (skipping breakfast, no snacks, and eating a normal - portion LCHF lunch and dinner), isn't that in essence the «
caloric restriction» that causes metabolism to decrease?
While it is true that the body will eventually revert to creating energy from muscle proteins during times of prolonged
caloric restriction, this is unlikely to happen during a
daily intermittent fast.
