Lack of speech clarity and an absence of knowledge about what to say in
daily situational
dialogues often leave these
students frustrated
with their skills when they actually live and study in the U.S. Expectations of communicating
with ease are often challenged because the lessons learned in English classes don't parallel real life situations encountered in North America.
In Children's House,
students have
daily exposure to the Spanish language through more formal lessons that engage them in simple
dialogue with an emphasis on producing words and sentences in Spanish
with appropriate pronunciation.
Dialogue journals, in which teachers reply in writing to
student entries, and learning logs, in which
students write about their content learning, have been found effective in encouraging ELLs to write
daily, interact
with the teacher, and reflect upon their learning and their comprehension (Kreeft - Peyton & Reed, 1990; Dolly, 1990).
As a graduate
student (Carnegie Mellon University), it is very rewarding to have the chance to
dialogue with top level art professionals on a
daily basis and mostly be listened as their peer.
