of Global Warming brings together, for the first time, empirical evidence
of loss and
damage from the perspective
of affected people in nine vulnerable countries...... «Loss and
damage» refers to adverse
effects of climate variability and
climate change that occur despite mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Loss and
damage is an important battleground in the
climate justice fight because countries in the
Global South are among the least responsible for
climate change, yet are suffering and will suffer the worst
effects of climate change.
Petroleum and coal companies are allowed to sell their products which, when consumed, cause untold trillions
of dollars in costs in human health and environmental
damage, and governments pay those costs in the form
of medical benefits, and eventually measures to deal with the
effects of global climate change.
On many occasions, we were pressured by developed countries and other groups to give way on our positions regarding a) loss and
damage (i.e. compensation for developing countries suffering from the
effects of climate change) and a b) 1.5 °C cap on
global temperature.
The debate about
climate change here often dwells on the direct
effects of global warming on our natural and cultural heritage, along with the
damage it will cause to agriculture and tourism.
