I ended up tossing my small
sponge applicator that it came with and instead I just dabbed my
damp beauty blender over the cushion then applied to directly over my face which seemed to work great.
I do recommend that you apply the foundation with a
damp beauty blender because it will make the foundation go on so much smoother (but you can use any foundation brush or
sponge).

beauty blender damp helps the foundation (or whatever product you use it for) sit on top of it rather than it being absorbed into the
