in some ways memory is a better key to the nature of
experience than perception, not only because, by the time we have used a
datum of perception, it will already have been taken over by memory, but
for the additional reasons: (a,) in memory there is less mystery concerning what we are trying to know than there is in perception [i.e., «our own past
human experiences»]; also (all) the temporal structure of memory is more obvious.
Theism explains everything we observe, argues Swinburne, including «the fact that there is a universe at all, that scientific laws operate within it, that it contains conscious animals and
humans with very complex intricately organized bodies, that we have abundant opportunities
for developing ourselves and the world, as well as the more particular
data that
humans report miracles and have religious
experiences.»
If the
data of philosophical reason are natural, that is, if they are given
for human experience independently of historical conditions, then natural theology as commonly understood becomes a major possibility.
The status of entities that can not be
data for human sense
experience has been tenuous at best.
We start with a paradigm that accounts
for the
data of our
experiences in all areas of
human endeavor.
As stated in Pursuing the Birth Machine: «Anthropological
data now suggest that the
human species has
experienced no significant physiological change
for the past one to two million years.
Whereas
humans are better at
experiencing authentic emotions and building relationships, formulating questions and explanations across scales and sources, deciding how to use limited resources across dimensions strategically (including which tasks machines should be doing and what
data to give them), making products and results usable
for humans and communicating about them, making decisions according to abstract values.

Data or
human experience?
In my book The Listening Leader: Creating the Conditions
for Equitable School Transformation, I offer a reframing of
data that encourages educators to treat
human experience, and particularly student voice, as sources of
data, which I divide into three levels.
The National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (NICHD SECCYD) collected detailed information on achievement, social development, family
experiences, child - care quality, and schooling
for roughly 1,300 children at regular intervals from birth on, yielding
data that have resulted in numerous influential papers on child care and family background effects on early achievement and social adjustment.
One key reason
for using an AI system is not that it will necessarily produce a far better prediction than an
experienced lawyer who has enough time to consider all past case
data, but that it will do so much faster than any
human could.
Another reason
