Just weeks later, Greenland was grabbing headlines: 97 percent of the
surface of its massive
ice sheet had melted to slush, with most of the melt occurring in just four
days.
Although the
surface of the Greenland
ice sheet can react rapidly to

ice below is actually an inert process — driven by climatic changes instead of single meteorological events.

Second, and less important but still rather spectacular, was the melting of virtually every square inch of the
surface of this
ice sheet over a short period of a few
days during the hottest part of the summer, a phenomenon observed every few hundred years but nevertheless an ominous event considering that it happened just as the aforementioned record
ice mass loss was being observed and measured.
If you think about it and if they «are» right about both the causes and the effects (melting
ice caps, raising sea levels — e.g. increased ocean
surface worldwide, increased
surface temperatures on land and at sea and erratic excesses in weather) then the results may well be an eventual drastic swing the other
day as we see increases in reflection, evaporation and conversion of «greenhouse» gases back into inert forms!
We map present -
day Antarctic - wide
surface velocities using Landsat 7 and 8 imagery spanning 2013 — 2015 and compare to earlier estimates derived from synthetic aperture radar, revealing heterogeneous changes in
ice flow since ∼ 2008.

This is getting to be about the right time of year, there will be 50 degree
days that during the night the temp drops below the dew point wringing water out of the air which collects on the grass (but not bare

days of vehicles over frozen roads in the Arctic; enhanced potential for glacier hazards and slope instability due to mechanical weakening driven by
ice and permafrost melting; regional ocean freshening; sea - level rise due to glacier and
ice sheet shrinkage; biotic colonisation and faunal changes in deglaciated terrain; changes in freshwater and marine ecosystems affected by lake -
ice and sea -
ice reduction; changes in livelihoods; reduced tourism activities related to skiing,
ice climbing and scenic activities in cryospheric areas affected by degradation; and increased ease of ship transportation in the Arctic.
Only four
days before, just 40 percent of the
surface ice layer was thawing.
This summer, in fact, virtually the entire
surface veneer of the Greenland
ice sheet melted in a matter of
days, something that Ohio State researcher Jason Box, who worked on the CALIPSO research, says could start happening every summer.
