So, I will have a fun first

Despite the popularity of my 30
Days of School Lunches post, I confess I fell deep into the hot lunch rotation with the Peanut last year.

One
of my favorite parts
of the
school day was
lunch.
In regard to primary and secondary education, initiatives include imposing caps on class sizes; ensuring
schools have the necessary support staff; funding full -
day kindergarten and half -
day junior kindergarten for vulnerable children; eliminating fees and fundraising for learning essentials, such as computers; phasing out private
schools and bringing charter
schools under the jurisdiction
of school boards; and providing breakfast and
lunch programs.
The same people who protest international support for third - world countries saying «we need to take care
of our own first» are ironically the same people who actually want to abolish food stamps, the WIC program, free
school lunches, welfare and social security in the US, never mind the fact that the people who benefit from these programs are the ones who cut their lawns, clean their homes, serve their meals in restaurants, and build their houses, all while going home to a tiny apartment they share with 6 other people and finding nothing to eat in the house but a can
of green beans because payday is still 2
days off and there's only enough gas in the car to get them to work the next two
days, so driving around town for 2 hours trying to find an open food bank isn't an option.
Breakfast,
lunch and dinner are cooked each
day by the caterers
of Woldingham
School who can provide meals for those with specific dietary requirements.
Last summer, we had a meal program where we served
lunch (free
of charge) to kids in the community who always get there two meals a
day at
school but go hungry during the summer.

of two Muslims in my

My hubby eats alot
of PB&J s for
lunches — and about 2 - 3
days of the week, I forget to make my sons
lunch until about 15 minutes before we have to leave for
school — so this will be perfect for me!
I try to make the first
day of school special complete with little notes in my kids
lunches.
The student starts the
day at 6:15 a.m.; takes classes such as AP calculus, honors Spanish, biology and art history from 7:50 a.m. to 3 p.m. (breaking for a student council meeting at
lunch); heads to a service club meeting after
school; and then goes to a two - hour swim practice before heading home at 6:45 p.m. for a shower, dinner and three to four hours
of homework.

Adding calories to
lunch doesn't help kids on
school holidays, on weekends, on half -
days, and during the summer (I've found there is a lag between the beginning / end
of school and the summer
lunch program — don't know if that is everywhere or just here.)

I am a 1st grade teacher in a southern state, Title I
school (95 % free and reduced
lunch) and here is the reality
of the new food guidelines in my
school: I know this is true because I eat breakfast and
lunch with my kids every
day and I eat the same foods they eat.
We have friends whose kids are going to the public kindergarten (only 1/2
day) with the «wraparound» enrichment program for the rest
of the
day; their little ones are already stressed out because they have just 2.75 hours in
school, during which they're basically being trampled on with mountains
of «instruction,» and the wraparound program gives just 20 minutes for
lunch while foregoing rest time in favor
of «reading instruction» and «homework help.»
We used to have 4 half hour
lunch periods per
day to accomodate 1400 - 1500 students at our
school, we then went to 1 «end
of the
day»
lunch period
of 20 minutes, and vending machines all over the
school — the students could either eat
lunch or go home — their choice.
So, it's
Day Four
of the Houston ISD
school year and, yes, I'm already looking for some
lunch box packing inspiration.
