If I have a ninth - grader who reads at third - grade level, I must give the student a strategy for breaking down the word into
decodable chunks so that they can read the type of words found in ninth - grade reading material.
This strategy has been proven effective in helping students to break words into manageable,
decodable chunks, read long words in content area text books, increase oral and silent reading fluency, and improve comprehension as decoding and fluency increase.
