But at the same time, moral
issues of major proportions are the daily bill
of fare in newspapers and on television, and our nation seems infected with social problems that have a
deep religious dimension:
poverty, pollution, discrimination, runaway technology, to name a few.
Many
of those
issues we still confront:
poverty and war, the relationship
of Eastern and Western thought, and especially how a
deep religious life may be lived in contemporary conditions.

issues of the day —

deep inequality — with a kind
of communitarian approach to Judaism.

deep interest in social
issues, especially since his research work focused on children
of poverty.
As we demonstrated in our 2015 analysis
of the Common Core debate on Twitter, the dispute about the standards was largely a proxy war over other politically - charged
issues, including opposition to a federal role in education, which many believe should be the domain
of state and local education policy; a fear that the Common Core could become a gateway for access to data on children that might be used for exploitive purposes rather than to inform educational improvement; a source for the proliferation
of testing which has come to oppressively dominate education; a way for business interests to exploit public education for private gain; or a belief that an emphasis on standards reform distracts from the
deeper underlying causes
of low educational performance, which include
poverty and social inequity.
This
issue is relevant to this blog in that any consideration
of sustainable paths for human societies on a crowding planet has to account for how we get our food — particularly the meat that, for now at least, remains a centerpiece
of diets once people emerge from
deep poverty.
Only when that transition occurs, so the notion goes, is there a chance
of resolving «commons»
issues like limiting chances
of dangerous human - caused disruption
of the climate; trimming the billion - person tail off the curve
of deep poverty that (along with dysfunctional government) holds back progress in the South; conserving the world's eroding biological patrimony.
