means to secure the «robust accountability» and «gracious restraint» that characterize

of the world (trade vices for virtues) and that we are being called into communion with Him via love for Him and one another in our
faith community and broader community — then it is no wonder some are lost or disillusioned.

Pastors should also be capable
of detecting the symbolism both
of words and
of earthly events — the analogies
of faith — through which the
deeper meaning of the divine mystery discloses itself.
For spiritual communion is by no
means merely an act
of longing for the reception
of the Lord under the sacramental signs; much

of prayer

faith such as the great religions make possible (and in our own part
of the world, that
means the Christian
faith) can have a
deep confidence that from the ruination
of existence, which is the result
of those evils just mentioned, the cosmic Love can extract genuine and abiding good.
