If you are not using the RGB
color mode, the
default front - lit display is on par with Amazon and Kobo.
The screen calibration options enable you to switch to SRBG, DCI - P3, adaptive
mode or customize your own settings, although the
default mode does give you the punchier
colors.

The
default calibration is Adaptive
mode, which includes custom
color sliders to tweak the
colors to look just the way you want.
A few more minor complaints: you can't see black text previews in notifications since the phone sets the
color to dark gray instead of the
default white, the settings icon appears «broken» near the bottom right, and putting the phone into developer
mode can be a nightmare.
At the moment, the updated Google Pixel doesn't have the Picture
color mode sRGB toggle in the Developer options, something that puts it on the same level as the new Pixel 2s that lack the setting, but this is because they come with the calibrated
mode as the
default.
When the display is set to the standard
mode (rather than the
default adaptive
mode), the
colors are warmer at 7131k.
Users are now able to choose from sRGB, Adaptive
Mode, DCI - P3 and the
Default color profile, while still being able to customize
color temperature and access night
mode for blue light filtering, and reading
mode for additional contrast on a sepia
color palette.
The panel is tuned to DCI - P3 by
default, but you can monkey with
colors in the settings, including tweaking white balance and switching to sRGB
mode for more accurate
color reproduction.
Backlight
color is white by
default but changes to blue when high - performance
mode is engaged.
The ZenFone 2 ships with a «balance»
color setting enabled that offers accurate
colors without too much extra punch, but if you want a bit more out of the display you can hop into the display settings and choose a reading, vivid or custom
mode instead — I personally liked the balance of the
default look.
Standard
mode is the
default setting for the display and this ups the vibrancy for a more vivid look and uses Sony's TRILUMINOS
color gamut instead.
There's an option to tweak the
color balance of the display from the
default vibrant
mode — which boosts saturation — to a more realistic setting on both phones.
Lighting is bright, the gradients between
colors are smooth, and (another nice touch) there are a number of
default modes you can cycle through on the keyboard itself sans software - tweaking.
On
default mode the white balance is a tad cool, leaving whites just a bit more blue than they naturally are, and when sRGB
mode is enabled you'll find that balance shifts to a warmer
color palette instead.
The
default settings in terms of
color calibration are perfectly fine, but you do have the option to tweak the settings more to your liking, with a reading
mode that is gentler on the eyes, a vivid
mode that drastically increases the saturation, and finally, a manual
mode for more granular controls over the display settings.
Colors pop and are very vibrant in the
default display
mode (Adaptive Display).
Many phones include optional sRGB
color modes, but both Pixel 2 devices are unusual in that they
default to sRGB.
While some may mention that AMOLED displays over saturate
colors, well, in that case, the company has given an Adaptive display screen
mode, which is a
default screen
mode, it optimizes the
color range, sharpness and saturation levels to the best of intent.
You always have a choice to change
color settings but we recommend you to stick to
default mode for punchy
colors.
If you'd rather not tinker, you could switch between four preset display
modes: Standard
mode uses
default settings; Eco
mode dims the display for lower power consumption; Graphics
mode enhances
colors for photo - viewing; and Movie
mode aims for crisp images in low - light environments.
