The objective of the original Sonic games was, essentially, to navigate a series of maps (usually from left to right) while avoiding hazards and
defeating additional enemies — and freeing captive critters.

So as you explore and
defeat enemies, you will be rewarded with
additional equipment, items and weapons to help in your quest.
However, as the story expands you will also gain
additional tools that you can use to help you
defeat enemies, and get through the different platforming sections.
Using the shovel to battle
enemies is fun, with combat being position - based; your foes can knock you back into hazardous obstacles or bottomless pits, making timing your attacks crucial to progress if you can't simply dodge them or need the
additional treasure they drop upon
defeat.
Overall the difficulty is quite easy, but for players wanting an
additional challenge there are Idols which can be activated which alter the
enemies characteristics to make them harder to
defeat.
Defeating enemies confers
additional souls, so souls are pretty easy to manage in ordinary battles.
When
enemies are
defeated, they can drop meat or robot parts, and eating or installing them will change a character into an intermediate form, Beast and Cyborg, and an
additional one will transform them into full Monsters or Robots.
Player can get
additional points by
defeating many
enemies in one move.
Defeating enemies no longer gives Spyro
additional gems.
