How is a tactic to break
the defensive shape of a team counter-intuitive?

the defensive shapes of teams unable to cope with his determination to target smaller full - backs and midfielders.

obviously I would prefer to have a much more suitable alternative in the
defensive midfielder positions but if they focused more on
defensive end and the occasional long - ball, this would allow Bellerin and Sead ample opportunities to bomb forward on their respective wings while still having enough cover to maintain their
defensive shape... it would likewise allow for overlapping runs on both wings, thereby letting both Sanchez and Perez to cut inside and get shots away in and around the top
of the box with their most dominant feet... if goals were needed I would sub Bellerin for OX and bring Ramsey in for Elneny then switch to a 3 -2-4-1 (more
of a 3 -1-5-1 with Ramsey playing higher up the pitch) and I would only use Giroud as a sub when the game dictated it for tactical reasons... this would allow us to be a high energy
team with incredible link - up play and a much more direct approach in the offensive end
it goes without saying that AW must leave and another coach to come he can stay close to the
team as manager or head
of board but it is clear that our
team is in need for so many years
of a
defensive midfielder (William Carvalho) and a left back (J Rodriguez) on top
of them if we buy Mbappe and this player from Celtic, Dembele i believe our
team will be in very good
shape as we will have players to cover all spots in good order we can get rid
of players such as elneny, gabriel, debuchy, jekinson, lucas, chamberlain, mertezaker, coq and get back jack wilshere who together with ramsey, xhaka, santi they can make a quite productive midfield together with Carvalho watching their backs if we sell ozil, sanchez we can move for 3 more players such as gueye, mahrez and gibson
My concern with Ozil is you can not be paying him because he is just a provider
of assist, he must be also seen in the
teams defensive shape and he must be a provider
of goals, 9 goals is just not good enough
Giving the
team a more
defensive shape and mindset has meant that the Gunners are no longer so horribly exposed to the counter attack and that has conversely allowed the
team to be more attacking as it has given the forward players the belief to press ahead with real intent as they no longer have the fear that losing the ball will lead to a goal at the other end
of the pitch.
Secondly, Wenger needs to become far more flexible when it comes to his formation selections... remember this is the same individual that hadn't used a 3 - back system for 20 years and only conceded to the experiment when the proverbial shit hit the fan... you know it killed him to adopt «Conte's» system, which is probably why he resisted so long; in fact his stubbornness to adjust even earlier might have cost us the 4 hole... much like most sports that have tactical formations, every
team should have a «base» offensive and
defensive scheme, but they likewise need to have some inherent flexibility depending on the opposing
teams tactics and / or when specific substitutions are made... how many times have you watched a Wenger - run
team make a late substitution but not change their
shape on the pitch... furthermore, how many times have you seen our
team fail to make the necessary adjustments at halftime due to Wenger's tactical stubbronness, which often led to giving up goals in the early minutes
of the second - half... the best
teams in the world know how to make halftime adjustments whereas we always seem to be surprised when the opposing
team throws a wrinkle into the mix following halftime... this my friend is soccer 101
Its not like we were caught out
of position through a counter but those two players did not track back to maintain a good
defensive shape for the
team.
But in those last few games, he should have been one
of the players with the intelligence and experience to maintain our
shape and
defensive discipline, and to lead our
team at the back, and for me he did not do that enough.
The test for West Ham is to take the newly discovered
defensive resilience and add in sufficient goal threat to break down a visiting
team who are also likely to defend in numbers — and to do this without the main creative force in the
shape of the suspended Manuel Lanzini.
